HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Spring Hill College softball team opened the 2011 season with two games at the William Carey University Invitational on Friday afternoon and came away with a 1-1 split.
The first game saw the Badgers fall to the Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene University (2-0) from Oklahoma by a score of 4-1.
The opening inning of the season was tough on the young Badger squad as three errors resulted in three unearned runs. Junior third baseman Jenny Laird of Mobile's Baker High School was 2-for-2 with a double while seniors Sam Brooks and Brooke Turlich, both from Belle Chasse, La., and sophomore Haley Brown of Satsuma, Ala., each collected hits for the Badgers.
On the rubber, Brooks (0-1) allowed five hits and no earned runs behind five total Badger errors in the hard-luck loss.
In the second game, the Badgers bounced back to score in four of their six innings at bat to take a 4-1 victory over the Lindenwood University Lions (0-1) from Missouri.
Junior Holli Smith from Brookhaven, Miss., went 2-for-3 with a solo homerun and Laird connected for two more doubles. Freshman Stephanie Fair from Woodstock, Ga., was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI while junior Kayla Moran of Pass Christian, Miss., ripped out a triple and Brown tallied another single for her totals.
Junior Brittany Fields (1-0) of Lucedale, Miss., was the winner in the nightcap, allowing just three hits and one earned run.
SHC (1-1) will next play 7th ranked Lee University at the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Crossover Tournament at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Ala., on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
