JACKSON, Miss. - The Spring Hill College women's basketball team stunned the SSAC West Division leading Belhaven University Lady Blazers with an 82-79 overtime upset win in a conference match at Rugg Arena on Thursday night.
Trailing 35-29 at the intermission, the Badger stayed within striking distance for the first five minutes of the period and then used a 9-0 run to jump out to a 52-44 bulge at the 12:17 mark.
Belhaven responded to retake the lead 57-55 with 8:15 remaining, but once again the Spring Hill women rallied to take as much as a 9-point advantage with less than five minutes on the clock.
By the 2:30 mark, Spring Hill clung to a 68-64 bulge, but a lay up by the Blazers' Regena Jackson gave the home team the lead at 70-68 with 1:41 to go.
SHC freshman forward Sha Sha Buchanan of McGill-Toolen Catholic High School in Mobile tied the game with a layup at 1:13 and then a last second jumper by Jackson was no good as the teams went into overtime.
The Badgers drew first blood in the OT with a 3-pointer by freshman guard Bria Bohanon of Ponchatoula, La., but the teams were separated by just a single point at 80-79 in favor of SHC with 54 seconds left.
With 17 seconds remaining, Jackson missed a jump shot that was pulled in by Bohanon, who would make 1-of-2 free throws on the other end. A last second 3-pointer by Jessica Barlow of the Blazers was no good as the Badgers pulled off the upset.
Bohanon recorded a career high 26 points for the Badgers while Buchanan notched a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds. Senior forward Lynleigh Hughes of Hammond, La., added 12 points and junior forward Erica Wright of Pace, Fla., put in 10 points.
Jackson and Barlow had 16 points apiece for the Lady Blazers while Kiara Johnson had 13 and Erica Laflore contributed 12 points. Portia Tucker grabbed 20 of Belhaven's 54 rebounds.
Spring Hill shot 48.3% (28-58) overall and 36.4% (4-11) from 3-point territory while turning the ball over 20 times and taking down 42 rebounds.
Belhaven (23-7, 10-2 SSAC West) shot 34.5% (30-87) from the field and was 4-of-17 (23.5%) in 3-point attempts. The Lady Blazers, who had already clinched the West Division Championship with a victory over Faulkner University last Saturday, committed 14 turnovers as the Badgers took away eight steals.
Spring Hill (11-18, 3-8 SSAC West) will host William Carey University (10-14, 5-6 SSAC) in their 2010-11 season finale on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center. Before the match, the Badgers will celebrate Senior Day 2011 by recognizing their two senior team members.
