The Spring Hill College women's basketball team wrapped up the 2010-11 season with a 56-51 conference loss to William Carey University on Saturday afternoon at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
Trailing Carey by a 28-24 deficit at halftime, Spring Hill fell behind by as much as nine points on three occasions in the second half.
With 21 seconds on the clock the Badgers trailed 54-47, but refused to quit as junior forward Erica Wright of Pace, Fla., made the first two attempts of a 3-shot foul and then collected her own rebound and converted the put-back to make it a 54-51 game.
Carey' Chelsea Combest, however, converted two free throws on the other end with just six seconds left to salt away the final score of 56-51.
Wright scored 16 points and pulled in eight rebounds to lead the Badger charge.
Shareka Hunt put 11 points in the bucket for Carey and also collected 19 of the Lady Crusaders' 54 rebounds. Crystal Tucker contributed another 10 points to the Carey cause.
Spring Hill shot just 33.4% (15-64) on the afternoon, including 21.1% (4-19) from 3-point territory while turning the ball over 13 times and taking down 35 rebounds.
Carey (11-14, 6-6 SSAC) secured the final slot in the SSAC Conference Tournament with the win and shot 33.3% (16-48) from the field. The Lady Crusader's outside shooting proved to be the difference as Carey drained 6-of-13 (46.2%) of their 3-point attempts. The Lady Crusaders committed 24 turnovers as the Badger defense kept the game close by taking away 11 steals.
Making an 8-win improvement over the 2009-10 season, the Spring Hill women finished the year with an 11-19 record and 3-9 in the SSAC West Division.
