The Spring Hill College men's basketball team finished the 2010-11 season with a 55-47 loss to William Carey University on Saturday evening at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
In a match that at times resembled a football game more than a basketball contest, the Badgers and the Crusaders were tied at 25 going into the halftime break.
The second half saw Carey focus on limiting the play of Badger freshman guard Charles Gordon of Birmingham, Ala., who scored nine points in the first period. The strategy proved successful as Gordon would fail to score in the second half and the teams traded the lead four times with seven ties in the final 20 minutes of play.
Tied at 41 at the 8:30 mark, William Carey outscored Spring Hill 12-1 over the next eight minutes to claw out a 53-42 advantage with only 35 seconds left to play.
Senior center Nick Brown of Rota, Spain, finished with 10 points for Spring Hill in his final game in purple.
Carey (18-11, 8-4 SSAC West) was led by Drew Meyerchick with 15 points.
The Badgers shot 36% (18-50) from the field and only 12.5% (1-8) from 3-point territory. SHC suffered 15 turnovers in the face of eight Crusader steals.
Carey shot 33.3% (16-48) overall and made just 14.3% (2-14) of their 3-point attempts. WCU also nipped SHC in the rebounding totals 36 to 35.
Spring Hill finished the year with a record of 9-18 and 3-9 in the SSAC West Division.
