On Monday afternoon, the 15th ranked Bethel College (Ind.) Pilots downed the Spring Hill College Badgers in a non-conference doubleheader at Murray Field by scores of 1-0 and 3-2.
The Pilots and the Badgers dodged raindrops in the opening game as SHC starter Sam Brooks (0-4) only allowed a 3rd inning infield single in the complete-game loss, but was done in by an unearned run in top of the 5th inning.
Bethel's Giana Zimmerman (2-0) kept the Badgers hitless through six and a third innings before shortstop Holli Smith beat out a grounder to short in the 7th to break up the no-no. Smith then advanced to second with just one out off a wild pitch before Zimmerman coaxed a fly ball to shallow center. Pilots' catcher Jenny Hedrick then ended the game with a snap throw to first that picked off Badger base runner Brooks who had reached via a hit-by-pitch.
Brooks tallied four strikeouts with just one walk in the loss while Zimmerman collected eight strikeouts and allowed three walks.
Spring Hill and Bethel (4-0) were tied a 1 run each in the 4th inning of the second game when the Pilots' shortstop Erin Kotlarz drove in two runs with a 2-out single to centerfield.
The Badgers cut the score to 3-2 in the 6th inning when Smith doubled to deep left-center and first baseman Stephanie Fair moved her to third with a single to left field. Catcher Holly Brown then laid down a bunt that brought in Smith under the throw to the plate. A single to right by second baseman Jessica Edgar loaded the bases with just one out, but the Pilots' second baseman Kaitlyn Dubois ended the rally with a great diving catch of a foul ball behind first base and then gunning down Fair at the plate for the double play.
Brittany Fields (1-2) took the loss while allowing 10 hits and four walks with no strikeouts. Katie Boocher (2-0) was the winner for the Pilots going the distance and giving up three hits (all in the 6th inning) with five walks and four strikeouts.
At the plate on the day, Smith's two hits led the Badgers while Hedrick had three hits and an RBI for Bethel.
SHC (1-6) will next face Notre Dame College (Ohio) (0-2) in a doubleheader at Murray Field at noon on Wednesday.
