The Spring Hill College softball team dropped both games of the opening day of the University of Mobile Classic on Friday, falling at home to Notre Dame College 5-4 in the afternoon and then dropping at 12-4 decision to Reinhardt University at UM Field that evening.
Sam Brooks (1-5) pitched the first game versus the NDC Falcons (1-9) and came up with a hard-luck loss as the Badgers committed six errors in the field behind her. Brooks allowed just one earned run off five hits with five strikeouts.
Kayla Moran was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and Stephanie Fair was a perfect 3-for-3 and drove in a run. Jessica Edgar added a triple and scored twice while Jenny Laird and Holli Smith each collected an RBI for Spring Hill.
In the day's second contest versus Reinhardt, the two teams traded a pair of runs each in the 1st inning, but the Badgers found themselves down 4-3 after three frames of play. Reinhardt tacked a 4-spot on the board in the 4th to build out a 7-3 advantage.
Spring Hill rallied to score a run and load the bases with one hit in the 5th inning, but a double play ended the threat. Reinhardt closed out the contest in the bottom of the 6th with a 5-run outburst to reach to 8-run mercy limit and drop the Badgers to 3-8 on the year.
Moran enjoyed a 3-for-3 outing in the second game while Fair and Smith each collected two RBI for Spring Hill. Brittany Fields (2-3) went four innings in the start and gave up seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
SHC will continue play in the tournament on Sunday versus St. Mary-of-the-Woods College at 2 p.m. at Murray Field and versus Martin Methodist College at 5 p.m. at the University of Mobile.
