Oklahoma Wesleyan University's Dustin Phelps pitched a complete-game shutout over Spring Hill College on Monday as the Eagles swept in to take a 4-0 nonconference win at historic Stan Galle Field.
Phelps (3-0) limited the Badgers to just six hits while walking two and striking out eight batters in 111 pitches.
The Eagle hitters gave their hurler all the support he would need in the 3rd inning when shortstop J.D. Nalder scored all the way from first base off a single through the gap in the left side of the infield on a hit-and-run play. A three-base fielding error by the Badger infield later in the same inning allowed another run to score and left centerfielder Cory Ford standing 60-feet from home plate. He then moved up those same 60 feet on the next pitch with on a straight steal of home, getting a hand past the tag of SHC catcher Fred Rossi.
OWU (13-9) added a run in the 6th inning with an RBI single by catcher Kraig Kelley. Left fielder Johnny Porter also had two hits for the Eagles.
Badger pitcher Alex Summers (0-1) went seven innings and gave up just two earned runs off six hits, six strikeouts and two walks.
Centerfielder Chris Foglia collected two hits including a 6th-inning double for SHC while first baseman John Hollingsworth slapped a double over third base in the 2nd frame.
The Badgers (10-13) will next host Concordia College-Selma on Tuesday at Stan Galle Field in a nonconference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. while OWU will play at the University of Mobile tomorrow before returning for a rematch with the Badgers on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
