HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Spring Hill College softball team lost a second consecutive shutout decision to Union University (Tenn.) 2-0 to open the afternoon, but bounced back to pound out a 4-1 victory over LSU-Alexandria at the final day of the William Carey Invitational on Saturday.
In the first game, 24th-ranked Union (15-4) scored two runs in the 2nd inning, but, otherwise, SHC starter Brittany Fields (2-8) mastered the Bulldog batters.
Fields allowed eight hits with a walk and five strikeouts while Keaton Kirk (6-2) was the complete-game winner for Union. Kirk gave up just two hits with no walks and nine strikeouts.
In the second game, starting pitchers Sam Brooks (5-10) and LSUA's Cortney Kennedy found themselves scoreless after three complete innings before the Badgers erupted for a 4-run 4th inning.
LSUA answered with a single run in the bottom of the frame, but Brook's had gotten all the support she would need to take home the complete-game victory. She would close the book with just seven hits allowed, no walks and two strikeouts.
Kennedy gave up six hits to the Badgers with two walks and six strikeouts.
Centerfielder Katelyn Hinson had two hits and two RBI for Spring Hill while over at third base Stephanie Fair collected two hits including a double. Shortstop Holli Smith also added a double and an RBI to the SHC totals.
Shortstop Jennifer Erwin was 2-for-3 with the lone RBI for LSUA.
SHC (7-18) will travel to Jackson, Miss., on Wednesday to open the 2011 conference slate versus 12th-ranked Belhaven University (23-3, 1-1 SSAC West).
