MARIETTA, Ga. - 15th-ranked Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) took two nonconference baseball victories over the Spring Hill College Badgers by the scores of 10-1 and 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Walter J. Kelly, Jr. Field.
In the first game, Spring Hill posted Badger starter Casey Adams (3-3) to an early 1-0 lead, but a controversial late balk call in the 4th inning negated the third out of the frame and resulted in five runs eventually crossing the plate for the Runnin' Hornets (25-10).
SPSU put another five spot on the board in the 6th inning, taking a 10-1 win in the opener.
Freshman second baseman Brian Sims had a double for the Badgers while SHC centerfielder Chris Foglia tallied the lone RBI for Spring Hill.
In the nightcap, the Badgers once again took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning off a sacrifice fly by catcher Brad Holstein, but could not hold on as SPSU rallied for single runs in the 6th and 7th innings to snatch away the 2-1 victory.
In both the 6th and the 7th innings, senior Joe Carter (3-6) earned two quick outs before surrendering a single followed by a run-scoring double in the carbon copy episodes.
At the plate, Sims collected two of the Badgers' four hits in the second contest.
The Badgers (12-23) will wrap up this series at SPSU (25-10) with a single game on Sunday at noon.
