The Spring Hill College baseball team came up on the wrong side of a 5-2 decision at the hands of the University of Mobile Rams on Tuesday evening at historic Stan Galle Field in a rare midweek nonconference meeting between the two programs.
Mobile (24-14) opened the scoring in the 1st inning with a 1-out double to deep left-centerfield by centerfielder Jeremy Williams that plated a run from 2nd base and then added a second tally in the 5th frame with a sacrifice fly to right by third baseman Brady King.
The big blow of the evening came in the 7th inning when Rams' right fielder Ryne Phillips blasted a 3-run homer over right-center off SHC reliever Alex Summers to stake Mobile to 5-0 lead.
SHC rallied with a run in the bottom of the 7th inning when first baseman Joe Carter drew a bases loaded walk off UM starter Corey Fountain (3-3) and another run in the 8th when shortstop Brian Traina's bases-loaded single plated centerfielder Alex Bumb.
The Badgers brought the tying run to the plate with 2-outs and runners at 1st and 2nd base in the 9th off Mobile closer John Ladnier, but a routine grounder to short ended the threat and the game.
Brooks Bobinger (1-2) took the loss for Spring Hill in five innings of work with two hits, five walks and four strikeouts. Fountain went 6.2 innings with seven hits three walks and five strikeouts. Ladnier picked up the save in a full inning of work with a hit and a strikeout.
Traina had two hits and an RBI for SHC and second baseman Brian Sims extended his current hitting streak to nine games with a single to right in the 3rd inning.
Williams was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Mobile as the Badgers out hit the Rams 10 to five but stranded 13 runners on base.
The Badgers (12-26, 1-8 SSAC West) will next host the Belhaven University Blazers (28-11, 7-4 SSAC West) in a 3-game conference game at Stan Galle Field beginning on Friday with a 6 p.m. single game and wrapping up on Saturday at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader.
