The Spring Hill College softball team shocked the 20th-ranked Auburn-University Montgomery (AUM) Lady Senators on Wednesday afternoon at Murray Field by rallying for four runs in the bottom of the 6th inning of the second game of a doubleheader and snatching away a 5-4 conference victory despite falling 4-0 earlier in the day.
AUM (26-12, 2-8 SSAC West) took a 4-1 lead with a 4-hit, 4-run 2nd inning and Senator starter Taylor Burt maintained a no-hitter through five innings. To start the 6th inning, however, AUM brought in Brandi Richards (14-3) to close out the game, but instead saw Richards allow four base-on-balls and record just one out.
Burt, who had moved to centerfield, was brought back to the rubber with the bases loaded, but was welcomed back by Badger shortstop Holli Smith with a double off the right field wall that plated two runs and gave SHC the 5-4 victory.
Smith's hit was the only Badger safety of the game, but first baseman Jenny Laird recorded an RBI off a sacrifice fly in the 1st inning while in the decisive 6th frame third baseman Stephanie Fair walked in a run and catcher Haley Brown's grounder also scored a run.
In the no decision, Burt went 5.2 innings with one hit, a walk and a strikeout. At third base for AUM, Cheyenna Kawal was 3-for-4 including two doubles and second baseman Kacie Ryal added a 2-run double in the 2nd inning.
Starting pitcher senior Sam Brooks (6-16) threw her fourth complete game in two days while earning the win and allowed seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts. In pitching both ends of two consecutive doubleheaders, Brooks tossed 458 pitches in a 28-hour-38-minute time span.
In the first game, Brooks suffered a complete-game loss for SHC with seven hits, no walks and four strikeouts as AUM won 4-0. Badger third baseman Stephanie Fair was 2-for-3 in the opener.
For the Lady Senators, Courtney Baker moved to 14-7 on the year in six innings of work and allowed three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Burt tallied two hits and scored twice while playing third base in the first game and catcher Ashton Nelson had two hits including a run scoring double for AUM.
The Badgers (8-27, 1-9 SSAC West) have cancelled their planned doubleheader at Thomas University (Ga.) on Saturday and will next host 2nd-ranked William Carey University (36-1, 8-0 SSAC West) in a conference doubleheader on Tuesday at 1 p.m. on Murray Field.
