The Spring Hill College baseball team took a 6-3 conference loss to the 23rd-ranked Belhaven University Blazers on Friday evening at historic Stan Galle Field.
The Blazers (31-11; 8-5 SSAC West) opened the scoring in the 2nd inning with a run-scoring single off the bat of second baseman Matt Discon and then erupted for four runs in the 6th inning as an infield error by the Badgers was followed by four Belhaven singles by the next five batters to make it 5-0 in favor of the visitors.
Spring Hill responded with a run in the 7th frame and an RBI-double by first baseman Joe Carter in the 8th to make it a 6-2 game. Designated hitter Fred Rossi drove a double into the right-center with two outs in bottom of the 9th to make it 6-3 and the Badgers refusing to die, but a fly ball to left field would close the book.
Belhaven's Allen Johnson went the distance to move his record to 4-3 on the year while allowing just five hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Johnson held the Badgers hitless for the first six innings before SHC second baseman Brian Sims extended his current hitting streak to 10 games with a leadoff single to right in the 7th inning.
Casey Adams fell to 3-4 for Spring Hill, but allowed just one earned run off 11 hits in eight innings of work with no walks and six strikeouts.
Rossi paced the Badgers at the plate with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. SHC catcher Brad Holstein added a hit and an RBI to the totals, as well.
Left fielder Jimmy Gilford collected three hits and drove in a run for Belhaven and first baseman Ryan Saunders was 2-for-3 with two runs driven in.
The Badgers (12-27, 1-9 SSAC West) will host the Blazers again on Saturday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Stan Galle Field.
