DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Spring Hill College men's golf team shot a 2-day total of 615 (+39) and finished in a tie for 5th place out of 8 teams with host Embry Riddle Aeronautical University at the annual "Bash at the Beach" Collegiate Invitational at the LPGA International Course on Saturday and Sunday.
The Badgers posted a 309 (+21) for 6th position after Saturday's first round, but shaved three strokes off their score on Sunday to mark a 306 (+18) and move into the tie at 5th place.
Individually, senior Chuck Balsamico of Covington, La., shot a final two-round score of 151 (77, 74, +7) over the 6957-yard, par-72 course for 14th place out of 44 golfers to pace the Badger finishers.
Seniors Javier Portal of Miami, Fla. shot 154 (79, 75, +10) for 18th place, Ricky Escobar of Miami carded a 155 (75, 80, +11) in 21st position and Eddie Smith of Houston, Texas, shot 156 (78, 78, +12) to land in 28th place. Sophomore Joseph Webster of Trussville, Ala., was 16-over at 160 (81, 79) to close out the Badger scores in 34th place.
Bethune-Cookman University took the event's team title with a final score of 588 (292, 296, +12) and the individual winner was Scott Cameron of Northwood University (Fla.) with an even par 144 (70, 74).
The Spring Hill College men's golf team next travels to Columbus, Ga., to play in the 2011 Southern States Athletic Conference Championships to be held at Green Isle Country Club on Monday and Tuesday, April 25-26.
