The Spring Hill College softball team closed out its 2011 home season on Friday afternoon with bookend 3-0 conference losses to 12th-ranked Belhaven University at Murray Field.
Both starting pitchers, Sam Brooks (7-19) for Spring Hill and Sarah Burns (24-5) for Belhaven, went the full 14 innings with Burns collecting two shutout victories and Brooks not allowing an earned run.
Brooks allowed 15 hits with no walks and five strikeouts for the Badgers, but took two hard-luck losses as her defense committed five errors in the twin bill.
Belhaven's Burns gave up just one hit in the first game and surrendered five hits in the second contest. On the day, she walked two and struck out 13 Badgers.
The first game was scoreless going to the 7th inning when Belhaven (38-8, 10-6 SSAC) put runners at 2nd and 3rd with an error by the Badger infield and a single up the middle with two outs. Blazer shortstop Christina Jaques then ripped a first-pitch, inside the park homer into right center to make the score 3-0.
Game 2 saw Belhaven score twice in the 3rd inning - once off an errant throw on an attempt to throw out a base runner stealing second that scored a runner from 3rd base and again when the next batter, left fielder Rian O'Bannon, laid down a perfectly placed sacrifice squeeze bunt.
In the 4th, Belhaven's second baseman Rachel Wright reached on an infield error and was driven in by a 2-out triple into the right field corner by Blazer right fielder Kayla Maldonado.
At the plate, leftfielder collected two hits for SHC while Jaques was 6-for-8 with a triple, a homer, three stolen bases and two runs scored for Belhaven and Maldonado was 3-for-6 with a triple and an RBI.
SHC (9-30, 2-12 SSAC West) will travel to Auburn University Montgomery (30-14, 10-4 SSAC West) for a conference doubleheader on Sunday scheduled for 1 p.m.
