MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Spring Hill College softball team split results in a conference doubleheader with the Auburn University Montgomery (AUM) Lady Senators on Sunday afternoon at the AUM Softball Complex as they lost the opener 1-0, but bouncing back to take the nightcap 3-2.
Sam Brooks (8-20) once again went the distance in both games for the Badgers, allowing just three hits with a walk and a strikeout in the first game to go along with seven hits, a walk and three strikeouts in the second contest.
In the second game, the Badgers scored the only three runs they would need in the 3rd inning when designated player Brooke Turlich successfully squeezed in a runner from 3rd base, third baseman Stephanie Fair drove in a run with a deep fly ball and catcher Haley Brown scored Turlich with a single to right field.
AUM threatened to the tie the game in the bottom of the 7th but second baseman Jessica Edgar turned a line drive into a game-ending double play to preserve the win.
Courtney Baker (16-8) took the AUM loss in Game 2 going three innings with four hits, a walk and no strikeouts.
The first game was decided by a single AUM run that scored in the 5th inning when pinch hitter Shea Driggers drove in pinch runner Danielle Kirkpatrick with a single.
AUM (31-17, 5-13 SSAC West) took the first game behind the strong pitching of Brandi Richards (12-7) who picked up the complete-game one-hitter with three walks and five strikeouts.
The Lady Senators were paced at the plate by shortstop Jyssica Pepper with two doubles in Game 2 for her only two hits on the day.
The Badgers (10-31, 3-13 SSAC West) will next play on Tuesday at archrival the University of Mobile as they take on the 7th ranked Lady Rams in a conference doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
