The Spring Hill College baseball team opened their final conference series of the year with a 4-1 win over rival Loyola University (La.) on Thursday evening at historic Stan Galle Field.
SHC starter Casey Adams (4-5) went eight complete innings in the victory and scattered nine hits - none for extra bases. He struck out seven and walked just two batters in a 139-pitch performance. Freshman Brooks Bobinger picked up his first career save by nailing down the final three outs with no hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
The Badgers opened the game with a 2-run 1st inning that was keyed by an RBI-double to center by catcher Brad Holstein that was followed by designated hitter Fred Rossi's single through the left side that plated Holstein.
Spring Hill added a third run in the next inning when Bobinger drove a single up the middle that scored third baseman Brian Traina from second base and chased Loyola starter George Smith (3-8) after just 1.1 innings of work. Smith allowed four hits and two walks with no strikeouts.
Leftfielder Kendell Carvin added an insurance run for Spring Hill in the 6th inning with a 2-out single between third and short that brought in right fielder Alex Summers from third base.
The Badgers (15-34, 3-13 SSAC West) will meet the Wolfpack (15-34, 5-11 SSAC) again on Friday in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Stan Galle Field. Between games, the Badgers will celebrate Senior Day 2011 in recognition of their three senior players.
