MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Spring Hill College softball team was swept in its final conference series of 2011 at Faulkner University by the scores of 3-0 and 6-5 and must now play the waiting game to see if the Lady Eagles can sweep Auburn University Montgomery in a Friday doubleheader to give SHC the final remaining spot in the 2011 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Tournament.
Sam Brooks (8-22) once again went the distance in both games for the Badgers, allowing seven hits and three unearned runs in the first game. Designated player Brooke Turlich was 2-for-4 at the plate in the opener.
In the second game, Badger third baseman Stephanie Fair belted a 3-run homer with one out in the top of the 7th inning to make it a 6-5 game and Spring Hill put the tying run on third with two outs, but a grounder back to the pitcher ended the threat and the contest.
Brooks gave up just five hits in the nightcap, but four Badger errors proved deadly in the field as all six Faulkner runs were unearned.
Spring Hill racked up 13 hits as Fair, Turlich, left fielder Kayla Moran, catcher Haley Brown, shortstop Holli Smith and first baseman Jessica Laird each had two hits. Smith and Laird's totals each included a double while right fielder Kayla Thompson also added a double.
The Badgers finished the regular season 12-33 overall and 5-15 in the SSAC West Division. If Faulkner (22-17, 8-10 SSAC West) can sweep both ends of its doubleheader with AUM (31-17, 5-13 SSAC West) on Friday, then Spring Hill will clinch the final remaining playoff berth by virtue of the SSAC tiebreaking rules.
