COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Spring Hill College men's golf team shot a 3rd round total of 304 (+16) on Wednesday and slipped into 5th place out of eight teams with a combined score of 897 (+33) at the 2011 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Championships held at Green Isle Country Club.
The Badgers shot a 12-over par 300 on Monday and a 5-over par 293 on Tuesday to find themselves in 4th place with one round remaining, but struggled over the 6592-yard, par-72 course on Wednesday morning.
SHC closed the year 27 strokes behind Tournament Champion William Carey University that shot a cumulative score of 6-over par 870 (286, 288, 296). Shorter University's Arvid Bengtsson (72, 70, 70) and Matt Youmans (70, 72, 70) were the Individual Co-Champions with scores of 212 (-4) to pace the field of 39 competitors.
Individually for the Badgers, senior Eddie Smith of Houston, Texas, finished tied for 6th place with a +3, 219 (75, 73, 71) and senior Chuck Balsamico of Covington, La., carded a +5, 221 (77, 72, 72) to finish tied for 10th position.
Sophomore Nathan Ceille of Hales Corner, Wis., marked a +12, 228 (76, 71, 81) to close in a tie for 16th place, senior Javier Portal of Miami, Fla., shot a +14, 230 (72, 78, 80) for 22nd place and sophomore Joseph Webster of Trussville, Ala., rounded out the SHC scoring in 31st place with a +24, 240 (80, 77, 83).
