THIBODEAUX, La. – The Spring Hill College women's soccer team suffered a 5-0 loss in its season opener at NCAA Division 1 opponent Nicholls State University on Friday afternoon.
The Colonels (1-0) broke open the scoring in the 19th minute when Alex Romanelli laced in a free kick from 25 yards out over the Badger wall and past SHC starting keeper sophomore Cassandra Amore of Pace, Fla.
NSU tacked on their second goal in the 36th minute when Kristy Tatum chipped in over a leaping Amore from 12 yards out. In the 42nd minute, Tatom added an assist to her totals with a nifty crossing pass to Sarah Tani who finished the goal to make it 3-0 at intermission.
SHC saw the Colonels add goal number four in the 72nd minute when Nicole Doherty cleaned up a shot that rebounded off a save by Badger keeper freshman Abby Massengale of New Orleans, La.
Tatom then closed out her "unnatural" hat trick with a goal in the 75 minute of play off an assist by Alexandria Marino.
The Badgers were out shot 18 to 3 and allowed four corner kick opportunities while NSU allowed just one for the visitors. Amore had two saves and Massengale stopped four shots-on-goal.
