The Spring Hill College men's soccer team opened the 2011 season with a convincing 5-1 non-conference victory over the visiting Texas College Steers in the second day of the "The Classic on the Hill" at Library Field on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Tyler Hartlage of Tampa, Fla., opened the scoring in the 8th minute with an unassisted goal and senior Josh Ledet from Fairhope, Ala. Added a second goal in the 20th minute off an assist by freshman Dylan Gardner of Waterloo, Ill.
Just 41 seconds after Ledet's goal, sophomore Patrick Culotta of New Orleans, La. added a third goal.
The Steers answered in the 33rd minute with an unassisted goal off the foot of Juan Montes as the teams went to intermission with SHC holding a 3-1 advantage.
Gardner collected his first career collegiate goal in the 71st minute after accepting an assist from fellow freshman Daniel Ochoa from Miami, Fla. Ochoa also assisted in the final goal of the day when freshman Nick Smith of Huntsville, Ala., scored with just 7 seconds remaining on the clock.
Senior Badger goalkeeper Cory Bronenkamp of St, Louis, Mo., faced just two shots and surrendered one goal with no saves while collecting his 13th career victory.
Texas College (0-2) keeper Alexis Ayala made five saves against 16 shots by Spring Hill. Spring Hill also took six corner kicks and limited TC to just two corner opportunities.
Spring Hill (1-0) will next host the Lyon College (Ark.) Scots (0-1) in a non-conference tilt at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Library Field.
