The Spring Hill College women's soccer team held off a second half rally by a determined Lyon College squad to secure a 2-1 non-conference win in the final day of the "The Classic on the Hill" at Library Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Badgers held a 1-0 lead at halftime courtesy of a goal by the "St. Louis Super Sisters" of Abby and Madeline Galen. Freshman Madeline crossed a beautiful pass into her sister, senior Abby, who drove in a goal in the 25th minute of play.
In the second period, the Galen sisters continue to roll when Madeline accepted a pass from senior Amber O'Connor of Ham Lake, Minn., and snuck a pass to Abby who rammed home the goal for a 2-0 Badger advantage in the 54th minute.
The Scots of Lyon College would not be bowed, however, and answered with a goal by Evelyn Gomez off a pass from Creeia Nuckols with 21 minutes remaining in the contest.
From that point, the Scots mounted a furious comeback attempt that resulted in several scoring opportunities, but a shot that ricocheted off the right post and six saves by SHC freshman goalkeeper Abby Massengale of New Orleans, La., kept the Badgers ahead.
Lyon had one final opportunity in the form of a corner kick attempt with just one minute left on the clock, but the Badger defense held as the ball was poked out to midfield and time expired.
Massengale faced 15 shots by the Scots, but allowed just the one goal while Lyon keeper Stephanie Spiteri saw nine shots by the Badgers and made two saves.
Spring Hill (2-1) will next travel to Pineville, La., to face Louisiana College (0-0) in a non-conference match at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
