JACKSON, Miss. –The Spring Hill College volleyball team took both of its matches versus Mississippi College and the University of New Orleans in the opening day of Millsaps College Invitational on Friday afternoon. In the early contest, the Badgers took a 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-17) victory over MC and followed that decision with another 3-0 (25-18, 25-10, 25-19) win over UNO.
In the day's first match-up against the Choctaws (1-1), the Badgers were led by senior right side hitter Yiting Cao of Shanghai, China, who racked up 21 kills and sophomore setter Taryn Nash of Independence, Mo., who distributed 38 assists while scrambling for 18 digs on defense.
Freshman middle hitter Megan Haber of Foley, Ala., stuffed four blocks at the net and scored six kills in the win.
The second match saw the UNO Privateers (0-1) and the Badgers tied at five before SHC took a 10-6 lead spurred by four consecutive kills by Cao.
Senior Holly Shultis of Pewaukee, Wis., closed out the second set by serving up three aces in four serves.
Cao recorded 16 kills against the Privateers while fellow senior Cassandra Marchand-Stewart of Grand Bay, Ala., tallied another 11 kills. Senior Abby Roam of Lebanon, Mo., pulled in 14 of the Badgers' 48 digs in the match and Nash handed out 38 assists.
For UNO, Laila Hansen had eight kills and Ryan Hamilton gave out 23 assists.
Spring Hill has yet to lose a set in its first four matches of 2011.
The Badgers (4-0) will remain in Jackson for two Saturday matches beginning with the host Millsaps College Majors at 12:30 p.m. followed by a tussle with the Martin Methodist College RedHawks at 2:30 p.m.
