MOBILE, Ala. – The Spring Hill College women's cross country team took home the championship in it first meet of 2011 at the 2011 Mobile Challenge of Champions Badger Brawl that ran at Langan Municipal Park on Saturday morning.
As a team, the Badgers scored 34 points over the 5-kilometer course and finished in a total team time of 1:53:29.58.
Senior Kate Imwalle from Mobile's McGill-Toolen Catholic High, far out-distanced the field of 26 runners and took home the individual championship a time of 19:41.34, putting more than one minute between her and 2nd place finisher Caitlin McMahon of Huntingdon College (21:46.73). Imwalle's time was also the 17th best 5-kilometer time in SHC Women's Cross Country history.
Sophomore Emily Dolan, also from McGill-Toolen, was in 3rd place at 21:46.73 and junior Payton Tanner of Fairhope, Ala., finished 5th in 22:38.74. Junior Kiearstan Carter of Mobile's Murphy High also scored for SHC in 14th position at 24:26.89 and senior Meghan Kacic of Tampa, Fla., closed the Badger scoring in 15th position at 24:55.88.
Other runners for SHC were sophomore Claire Stewart of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., was 16th at 25:14.04 with her sister, senior Emily Stewart, placing 18th at 25:37.13. Senior Ashley Derenbecker from Bay St. Louis, Miss., ran in 22nd position in a time of 28:46.68 and senior walk-on Alex Davis of St. Louis, Mo., closed in 25th place in 31:16.26.
The Badgers next run on Saturday at the Azalea City Classic hosted by the University of South Alabama beginning at 10:40 a.m. at Brookley Gulf Pines Golf Course.
