The Spring Hill College volleyball team opened the 2011 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Divisional Crossover Tournament with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-7, 25-14) victory over the Brewton-Parker College Lady Barons at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Friday night.
Spring Hill was paced by senior All-America right side hitter Yiting Cao of Shanghai, China, who ripped out 12 kills with four services on offensive and collected three block assists on defense.
Sophomore setter Taryn Nash of Independence, Mo., handed out 29 assists with seven digs and senior outside hitter Cassandra Marchand-Stewart of Grand Bay, Ala., served up five aces. Other outstanding Badger performers on the night were senior outside hitter Abbey Roam of Lebanon, Mo., who totaled 11 receptions and sophomore libero Meredith Donald of Mobile's McGill-Toolen High School who tallied six digs and nine receptions.
Jessica Hill with seven kills and Bobi Boyer with 12 assists and five digs led BPC (5-3, 0-1 SSAC).
In other tournament scores, Lee University opened the weekend's festivities with a 3-2 come-from-behind (25-18, 18-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-8) decision over Loyola University (La.) (3-3, 0-1) and Shorter University swept a 3-0 score (25-15, 25-16, 25-16) from the University of Mobile (5-5, 0-1).
The Badgers (13-0, 1-0) will continue play as the host team of the 2011 SSAC Divisional Crossover Tournament in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. when versus the 2nd ranked Lee Lady Flames (6-1, 1-0) followed by a 3 p.m. match with the Shorter Lady Hawks (10-2, 1-0).
