The Spring Hill College men's soccer team allowed three second half goals and suffered a 5-2 conference loss to Lee University at Library Field on Friday afternoon.
Leading Badger goal scorer sophomore Patrick Culotta of New Orleans, La., opened the scoring with his sixth goal of the year off an assist by freshman Tyler Hartlage of Tampa, Fla., in the 13th minute of play.
Lee (6-1, 1-0 SSAC) responded with a goal in the 31st minute off the foot of Sias Reyneke via an assist from Sebastian Vallejo.
Disaster struck the Badgers in the 44th minute when freshman defender Jabulani Thompson of Miami, Fla., inadvertently scored an own goal while trying to clear a Lee shot attempt from distance and sending SHC to the intermission down 2-1.
Culotta opened the second half with a tying Badger goal in the 48th minute, but just five minutes later Josh Bell's goal would hand the lead back to the Flames at 3-2.
Vallejo made it 4-2 in favor of the visitors in the 56th minute, but the capper came in the 68th minute of play when reserve Flame forward Chevon Roberts lifted a free kick from 35 yards out just under the crossbar and over the hands of the leaping Badger goalkeeper senior Cory Bronenkamp of St. Louis, Mo., to make the game 5-2.
Lee outshot SHC 19 to 8 and took eight corner kicks while allowing just three corner opportunities to the Badgers.
Bronenkamp made three saves and freshman keeper Patrick Danner of Tampa also recorded three stops in 20 minutes of play. Benjamin Perez and Joey Hinshaw each made one save for the Flames.
The loss was the third consecutive setback for the Badgers after opening the year with four victories.
Spring Hill (4-3, 0-2) will remain at home to face Shorter University (4-2, 0-0) on Saturday in a conference match at Library Field beginning at 4 p.m.
