The Spring Hill College men's soccer team snapped a 3-game losing skid with a 2-0 shutout victory over Shorter University in a conference match at Library Field on Saturday afternoon.
Spring Hill broke open the scoring in the 30th minute when sophomore forward Patrick Culotta of New Orleans, La., lifted a beautifully placed free kick from 20 yards out past the right side of the Hawks' wall and into the right corner of the goal.
From there, the game became a physical contest with the teams combining for 37 fouls and seven yellow cards.
The Badgers iced the game in the 80th minute of play when freshman forward Tyler Hartlage of Tampa, Fla., accepted a pass from senior Gable Fortune of St. Louis, Mo., just outside the 18-yard box and dribbled in to score on a nifty left-to-right shot across the face of the goal into the lower left hand corner.
Senior goalkeeper Cory Bronenkamp of St. Louis made six saves against 18 shots by Shorter (4-4, 0-2 SSAC) to pick up his second shutout win of the year. Ryan Edwards of the Hawks made three saves versus 16 SHC shots.
Shorter took six corner kicks and the Badgers tried two corner chances in the contest.
Spring Hill (5-3, 1-2) will travel to Cleveland, Ga., on Friday to face Truett-McConnell College (1-6, 0-2) in a conference match beginning at 2 p.m.
