CENTRAL, S.C. – The Spring Hill College men's soccer team stormed past conference foe Southern Wesleyan University by a 3-0 score for an important road victory on Saturday evening.
Badger forward freshman Mario Escalante from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, scored his second goal of the year off an assist from freshman forward Tyler Hartlage of Tampa, Fla., to stake the Badgers to the early lead with 17:27 remaining in the first half.
Hartlage dished out another assist in the second period when senior forward Gable Fortune from St. Louis, Mo., accepted his pass and scored to put the Badgers up 2-0 with 38:12 left on the clock. Hartlage and Fortune would team up again just six minutes later when Fortune made the score 3-0 in favor of Spring Hill.
Senior goalkeeper Cory Bronenkamp of St. Louis recorded his third consecutive shutout, the fourth shutout of 2011, and the 11th blanking of his career while facing 14 shots by SWU and making five saves.
Spring Hill fired 12 shots with 11 being on-goal as SWU keeper John Prochack made eight saves.
The Warriors fell to 5-3 on the season and 2-2 in the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC).
The Badgers are now just one victory away from tying the school record for wins in a men's soccer season set by the 2003 squad that went 8-12 under then Head Coach Wulf Koch.
Spring Hill (7-3, 3-2 SSAC) will attempt to reach that mark when they host Huntingdon College (0-7-1) in a non-conference match at 4 p.m. Tuesday on Library Field.
