The Spring Hill College men's soccer team bested the Brewton-Parker College Barons 2-0 in a conference match at Library Field on Friday afternoon and also set a new standard for winning within the program. The Badgers secured their 9th win of year surpassing the 8-win record of the 2003 SHC squad.
Freshman forward Mario Escalante of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, scored the first Badger goal on a shot from over 25-yards out that sailed beautifully over the Lions' keeper's leaping stab and into the back of the net in the 3rd minute of play.
After that, both defenses clamped down in a physical match that featured 16 fouls by the Barons and seven by the Badgers, including two BPC yellow cards and one SHC yellow card.
Freshman forward Tyler Hartlage of Tampa, Fla., finally broke the match open with a goal from six yards out off a header of an entry pass by senior midfielder John Tanner of Gulf Shores, Ala., in the 87th minute of play.
Freshman goalkeeper Patrick Danner of Miami, Fla., recorded his second shutout in only two collegiate starts with seven saves against 21 shots. Perhaps his most important being the leaping punch of a save that sent a sure game-tying goal over the crossbar with five minutes left to play.
BPC (4-5-1, 1-4 SSAC) keeper Daniel Clavijo made nine saves against 21 Badger shots in the loss. Both teams took five corner kicks.
Spring Hill (9-3, 4-2) will attempt to secure the first winning season in the history of a program that dates back to 1992 with a match versus the Emmanuel College Lions (7-5, 1-5) in a conference match at 4 p.m. Saturday on Library Field
