The Spring Hill College women's soccer team used a 3-goal second half to salt away a 4-0 shutout win over Emmanuel College in a conference match at Library Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Badgers scored first in the 22nd minute of play when the St. Louis, Mo., sister duo of Abby and Madeline Galen teamed up for a beautiful give-and-go combination wherein the freshman Madeline touched a pass to her sister, the senior Abby, who turned around a defender and returned the pass to Madeline streaking to the goal for the score.
In the 56th minute, senior Elaine Femmer of St. Louis headed a ball out of a midfield battle for possession and found senior forward Amber O'Connor from Ham Lake, Minn., alone in the SHC half of the field for a one-on-one break-away goal against Lions' keeper Cyara Castillo.
Less than a minute later in the 57th minute of play, Femmer scored a goal of her own from just five yards out off an assist by senior midfielder Katie Pendergast of St. Louis.
Abby Galen then was on the scoring end of a Madeline Galen to O'Connor combination that covered the length of the SHC side of the field in the 68th minute.
On defense, freshman Abby Massengale of New Orleans, La., made five saves against nine EC shots for her second shutout of the year. For the Lions (6-6, 1-5 SSAC), Castillo made 10 saves against 22 shots by SHC.
The win was the fourth consecutive victory and the second straight shutout for the Badgers after suffering a 5-game losing skid earlier this season.
Spring Hill (7-6, 4-3) will next travel to Auburn University Montgomery (6-6, 5-2) in a conference match at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the AUM Soccer Complex.
