The Spring Hill College men's soccer team took a hard-fought 2-1 loss to conference foe and 7th-ranked William Carey University in a match at Library Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Carey (13-1-2, 8-0-2 SSAC) took a 1-0 lead in the first half with a goal by Luis Trude off an assist by Francois Navarro, but the Badgers regrouped at halftime and scored a goal from 15 yards out off a breakaway opportunity by freshman defender Dylan Gardner of Waterloo, Ill., in the 53rd minute.
The game then became a battle for midfield possession and defensive stands before the Crusaders broke the hearts of the Badgers with a goal in the 87th minute by Patrick Fleming via an assist by Chris Wood.
SHC freshman keeper Gabriel Jaramillo of Miami, Fla., made six saves against 20 Carey shots while Carey's Carl Goody made five saves versus 13 Badger attempts.
Corner kicks were even at four apiece.
Spring Hill (10-7, 5-6) will next travel to archrival and 4th-ranked the University of Mobile Rams (14-1-1, 9-1-1) on Saturday for a conference tilt beginning at 7 p.m. as both teams will wrap up the 2011 regular season.
