The 2011-12 Spring Hill College women's basketball preseason opened with a 71-61 exhibition win over Selma University on Friday night at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
Despite a slow start against the Bulldogs (1-1), the Badgers regrouped to take a 32-23 lead into the locker room at halftime at then kept Selma at arm's length for most of the 2nd half in a workman-like victory.
All 11 active Badgers saw action in the game with junior guard Kristin Rogers of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., topping the scoring list with 16 points in an 8-for-13 performance.
Freshman forward Cassandra Mitchell of Apex, N.C., dropped 11 points in the buckets in her collegiate debut while junior forward Jackie Higgenbotham of Birmingham, Ala., and junior center April Bradford from Pensacola, Fla., both scored 10 points.
The Badgers suffered 33 turnovers against 18 steals by the Bulldogs, but made up for poor ball-handling with a 45.6% (26-57) night from the floor and a 36.4% (4-11) effort from the 3-point line.
Spring Hill also out-rebounded Selma by a 50 to 35 margin. Sophomore guard Tempey Hamilton of Mobile's Murphy High School finished atop the SHC rebounders with eight total boards.
Selma was paced by Ashley Henley with 16 points and Jamia Whiting with 10 points and eight rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 33.3% (20-60) and were just 1-of-5 from behind the 3-point line.
Spring Hill opens the regular season at 16th-ranked Xavier University (La.) (1-0) at The Barn in New Orleans at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
