The 2011-12 Spring Hill College men's basketball preseason schedule wrapped up on Friday night with the Badgers taking an 80-66 win over the Selma University Bulldogs at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
Spring Hill jumped out early in the 1st half and quickly built a double-digit lead that grew to as much as 14 points at 32-18 with three minutes remaining in the period, but Selma (0-2) was able to slice the Badger advantage to 37-29 at the intermission.
The Badgers used the break to refocus and rebuilt a healthy 12-point lead and then maintained a 10- to 14-point advantage throughout the 2nd half and held a 16-point bulge with 5:23 left in the game.
Freshman center Jake Thelen of Edgewood, Ky., led the Badgers with 19 points scored and sophomore guard Todd Martin from Mobile's St. Paul Episcopal School poured in 14 points. Junior guard Brett Williams of Oviedo, Fla., added 13 points to the SHC cause.
The Badgers shot an impressive 54% (27-50) on the night including 8-of-18 (44.4%) shooting from behind the 3-point line. Spring Hill edged the Bulldogs in rebounding 35-32 while both teams posted 18 turnovers.
Selma was paced by Jamie Washington with 14 points, Josh Williams with 13 points and Adrian Nelson with 10 points and nine rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 42.4% (25-59) and 8-of-28 (28.6%) from 3-point land.
Spring Hill opens the regular season with a road game at 13th-ranked Tougaloo College at 7 p.m. on Monday in Jackson, Miss.
