TOUGALOO, Miss. – The Spring Hill College men's basketball team opened the 2011-12 regular season schedule on Monday night with a 76-55 loss at the hands of the 13th-ranked Tougaloo College Bulldogs.
Spring Hill trailed 35-22 at the half and the Bulldogs used a dominating rebounding performance to keep the Badgers at arms length throughout the second period of play.
Sophomore guard Todd Martin of Mobile's St. Paul's Episcopal School scored 17 points in the SHC cause, but freshman center Jake Thelen of Edgewood, Ky., was close behind with 16 points. Junior guard Brett Williams from Oviedo, Fla., also pitched in 11 points.
The Badgers shot 42.5% (17-40) on the night, but were out-rebounded 35-15 by Tougaloo. Both squads suffered 21 turnovers.
Tougaloo (1-2) was led by Marquis Mems with 22 points. The Bulldogs shot 47% (28-59) from the field as a team.
Spring Hill (0-1) will next host Southern University-New Orleans (SUNO) Knights on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
