BILOXI, Miss. – At the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) annual Volleyball Awards Banquet on Thursday night, Spring Hill College head coach Peggy Martin was named the 2011 SSAC Coach of the Year in recognition of her squad's perfect regular season record of 36-0.
Along with her team's 36-0 mark this season, Martin's ladies lost just seven sets during the season, are currently ranked 18th in the NAIA poll and took home 16 individual conference or divisional awards.
Two of Martin's seniors, Yiting Cao of Shanghai, China, and Abbey Roam, of Lebanon, Mo., were also named to Capital One Academic All-District Team by CoSIDA.
Martin now holds the third most wins by a head coach at any level of collegiate volleyball with a total of 1,135 victories and surpassed the 1,100-wins mark in the first match of this season with a 3-0 victory at home versus Southeastern University (Fla.).
Three years ago, Martin inherited a program that suffered through an 8-16 season in her debut year at SHC in 2009, but turned their record around in 2010 under her direction to a 27-5 mark and taking the first of two consecutive SSAC West Division titles.
The Badgers begin the 2011 post-season on Friday at 11 a.m. at the SSAC Tournament in Biloxi, Miss., versus Brewton-Parker College.
