The Spring Hill College women's basketball team dropped a 78-70 decision to Faulkner University in a conference match at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
Eight minutes into the game, the Lady Eagles (14-6, 5-4 SSAC) held an 8-point lead at 20-12 and built out as much a 13-point advantage on four different occasions in the half. Faulkner took a 47-34 cushion into the break with Eagle center and Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) leading rebounder Brittany Carter controlling the interior action with 10 rebounds and 18 points.
With 13 minutes left on the clock, Spring Hill found themselves trailing by a 62-43 deficit, but then filled the hole to just a 7-point margin at 73-66 with 3:15 to go.
A two point bucket by Badger sophomore guard Bria Bohanon of Ponchatoula, La., made it a 75-70 disadvantage for the home team with 1:32 on the clock, but a huge shot clock-beating 3-point bucket from the right side by Faulkner's Spenser Cantrell with 58 seconds remaining iced the game for the Eagles.
Spring Hill was paced by junior center April Bradford of Pensacola, Fla., who tallied her 9th double-double outpouring of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Bohanon also dropped in 13 points while sophomore forward Sha Sha Buchanan from Mobile's McGill-Toolen Catholic School had 12 points and junior forward Jackie Higgenbotham of Birmingham, Ala., added 11 points.
As a team, the Badgers were 25-of-57 for 43.9% from the field and 4-of-11 for three-point range for a 36.4% effort. SHC lost 20 turnovers against 14 steals by Faulkner.
For the Eagles, Carter led the field with 26 points and 17 rebounds while Christina Hayes had 14 points and Vittoria Poole added 10 points. Faulkner out-rebounded the Badgers 38-33 and turned the ball over 19 times versus 12 Badger steals.
Faulkner shot a solid 50.7% (36-71) from the field and was 3-of-16 (18.8%) from long distance.
Spring Hill (6-11, 1-8 SSAC) will remain at home this week to play the Southern University-New Orleans (SUNO) Lady Knights (7-7) in a non-conference game on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. In an earlier match this December, the Badgers took a 64-51 victory over SUNO at The Castle in New Orleans.
