The Spring Hill College women's basketball team lost an 81-63 non-conference decision to Southern University-New Orleans (SUNO) at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center on Wednesday evening.
SUNO never trailed in the contest and hopped out to an early 15-5 lead just seven minutes into the game. The Badgers battled back to cut their deficit to just three points at 29-26 with 4:39 before the half, but two minutes later the Lady Knights had rebuilt a 10-point advantage at 36-26 and took a 41-29 cushion into halftime.
The Badgers would get no closer in the second half as SUNO took as much as a 24-point lead at 69-45 with 8:24 showing on the clock.
Sophomore guard Bria Bohanon of Ponchatoula, La., scored 12 points for the Badger cause while sophomore forward Sha Sha Buchanan of Mobile's McGill-Toolen Catholic High School and junior center April Bradford of Pensacola, Fla., both hauled down 12 rebounds.
SHC shot just 25.6% (21-82) and was only 1-of-13 (7.7%) from 3-point distance. Spring Hill turned the ball over 18 times against seven SUNO steals.
SUNO (10-7) was paced on offense by Christine Conner with 13 points and Janee Morton recorded a double-double performance with 12 points and 11 rebounds. April Perry also scored 12 points and Rose Boatner came off the bench to add 10 more for the Lady Knights.
The Lady Knights shot an even 50% both from the field (31-62) and from behind the 3-point line (2-4) and outscored SHC 42-28 in the paint. SUNO turned the ball over 21 times in face of seven SHC steals, but the Lady Knights won the rebounding war 55-54.
Spring Hill (6-12, 1-8 SSAC) will remain at home on Thursday to play arch-rival the University of Mobile (6-12, 4-5 SSAC) in a conference game at 5:30 p.m.
