After waiting though a 2½ hour rain delay, the Spring Hill College baseball team opened its 2012 home season with a 11-0 non-conference victory over the Blue Mountain College Toppers at historic Stan Galle Field on Friday night.
The Badgers opened the scoring with a 5-run 2nd inning that was highlighted by a Grand Slam out of left field by senior right fielder Wayne Huell of Warrensburg, Mo.
Huell added a run-scoring single in the Badgers' 2-run 3rd frame and sophomore first baseman Robert Boudreaux of Lafitte, La., closed out the Badger onslaught with a 2-run single to left-center in the 6th inning.
Junior Nick Schmiemeier (1-0) of St. Louis, Mo., picked up the win in his first start for Spring Hill with two hits allowed, two walks and four strikeouts in five innings of work. Junior Jeff Keenum of Biloxi, Miss., and freshman Keller Douglas of Covington, La., each pitched a full inning of relief to combine for the shutout.
Huell was 2-for-2 on the evening with six RBI, while senior left fielder Kendell Carvin of Mobile's Murphy High School was 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
Zane Treadaway (0-2) took the loss for the Toppers in 2.1 innings allowing six hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Spring Hill (2-1) will wrap up this 3-game series with a noon doubleheader versus the Toppers (2-4) on Saturday at Stan Galle Field.
