The Spring Hill College men's basketball team wasted little time in building a 21-5 lead in the first 10 minutes of play before coasting to a 72-58 non-conference victory over Dillard University on Monday night at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
The Badgers carried a comfortable 37-21 lead into halftime and built out as much as a 64-40 advantage over the Bleu Devils with 7½ minutes left in the contest.
Badger freshman center Jake Thelen of Edgewood, Ky., had 18 points to lead all scorers while senior point guard Stephen Burches added 16 points, sophomore forward Alex Looney of Mobile's Murphy High School had 10 points and freshman forward Frederick Gatson of Riverdale, Ga., came off the bench to contribute 10 points.
The Badgers shot 50% (23-46) from the field and made 1-of-6 (16.7%) 3-point attempts while also out-rebounding Dillard 35-29 on the boards.
Dillard (1-21) was paced by Troy Bertrand's 11 points and Rene Benjamin's 10 points. SHC held the Bleu Devils to 29.4% (15-51) from the field and 18.8% (3-16) from 3-point land.
Spring Hill (12-10, 6-8 SSAC) will travel to Montgomery on Thursday to take on the Eagles of Faulkner University (12-12, 5-9 SSAC) in a conference game beginning at 7:30 p.m. The match will also be available via a live video Web stream at http://www.ssacsports.com/f/Live_Stream.php.
