MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Spring Hill College men's basketball team lost a 62-57 decision at Faulkner University in a conference game on Thursday night.
Sparked by 3-for-4 in 3-point shooting by senior guard Tyler Schwab of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., and a perfect 5-for-5 effort by freshman center Jake Thelen of Edgewood, Ky., the Badgers jumped out to a 31-25 lead at the halftime intermission.
With 12:34 left on the clock, the Badgers' lead had slipped to just 38-36 as Faulkner clawed back into the contest. The Eagles then would then take a 43-42 lead at 8:35 off two free throws by Adam Okechukwu.
An 11-0 run by Faulkner (13-12, 6-9 SSAC) was capped by a 3-pointer by Malik Major of the Eagles that was followed by a Decorey Jones bucket to make it a 50-42 Faulkner advantage with 5:48 remaining.
Junior Badger guard Brett Williams of Oviedo, Fla., would convert on the 3-point play with 2:15 to play and followed that play with a 3-point bucket just one minute later to make it a 5-point lead by Faulkner at 58-53.
Thelen cut it a 3-point game at 58-55 with 41 seconds to play, but a bucket with just 10 seconds left by Faulkner's Lante Phillips finally put the game out of reach for Spring Hill.
Thelen scored a Badger season-high 28 points for SHC but went scoreless for a crucial 5½ minute span between the 9:54 and 4:29 marks of the second half.
The Badgers shot 39.2% (20-51) from the field and were 21.1% (4-19) from 3-point distance, but suffered 17 turnovers and were also out rebounded 40-27 by the Eagles.
Chris Palmore had 15 points and Okechukwu netted 13 more for Faulkner who shot 33.9% (21-62) overall and 18.8% (3-16) in their 3-point attempts.
