MONTGOMERY, Ala. – After a 48-hour weather delay, Spring Hill College and Auburn University Montgomery (AUM) finally opened their three-game Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) series on Sunday with AUM taking both ends of the doubleheader 7-3 and 13-0 at the AUM Baseball Complex.
The 13th-ranked Warhawks (14-8, 6-2 SSAC West) took an early 1-0 lead in Game 1 on a sacrifice fly to centerfield in the 1st inning off SHC starter Casey Adams (2-1) and expanded the advantage to 4-0 in the 2nd frame with three runs off five hits highlighted by shortstop Branden Kelley's run-scoring double to right center.
In the meantime, AUM starter Cory McGinnis (4-0) cruised through the first three innings allowing just two hits to the Badger line up, but Spring Hill dented the scoreboard in the 4th inning off a double to centerfield by designated hitter Ryan Stevens that plated shortstop Ryan Cummings who had reached base on a leadoff bunt single.
Stevens would later score off a single to right by first baseman John Hollingsworth to halve the Warhawk lead down to 4-2.
AUM answered with four hits and two runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to regain the 4-run advantage at 6-2.
Adams went five innings for SHC and allowed 12 hits and a walk with two strikeouts before yielding to David Dupuy who surrendered a 6th-inning run off a walk and one it.
Left fielder Kendell Carvin would blast a solo homer to left to leadoff the 7th to make it 7-3, but the Badgers would get no closer as McGinnis took the complete game victory for AUM with six hits, nine strikeouts and no walks.
In the night cap, things did not get much better for the Badgers as starter Michael Moch (2-2) gave up five runs in the 1st inning off six AUM hits and a walk. An AUM run in the 2nd was followed by two more unearned runs in the 3rd inning as the Warhawks built out an 8-0 bulge.
Moch would last three innings for Spring Hill with nine hits five walks and two strikeouts before handing the ball to reliever Jack Howard to start the bottom of the 4th inning.
AUM added three more runs in the 5th and two runs in the 6th inning on the way to a 13-0 "Mercy Rule" decision after 6½ innings of play.
The Warhawks' Cody Hall (3-1) allowed just two hits in his complete-game game with three walks and seven strikeouts.
