On Tuesday afternoon, the Spring Hill College softball team lost twice at Day 2 of the University of Mobile Classic, taking a 7-6 loss to Madonna University and a 4-1 downturn to Morningside College.
In the first game of the day, SHC took an early 2-0 lead with a 2-run homer by freshman catcher Jade Bourgeois in the bottom of the 1st inning, but Madonna (4-6) answered with a pair of game-tying runs in the 3rd inning.
Madonna took a brief 3-2 lead in the top of the 5th, but the Bourgeois once again came through for the Badgers (4-4) with a 2-run single to center that staked SHC to a 5-3 advantage.
Madonna then tied the game at five in the 6th and took a 7-5 lead in the 7th inning. The Badgers made it 7-6 off a third run-scoring hit by Bourgeois with two outs, but a pop-out to short would close the door on the purple and white.
SHC pitcher Linsey Dickerson (2-2) allowed 12 hits with no walks and three strikeouts in the loss.
In the second contest versus Morningside (3-3), Spring Hill fell behind 2-0 in the 1st inning, but halved the score to 2-1 in the top of the 3rd inning when senior first baseman Jenny Laird brought in a run with a single to centerfield.
Morningside's Courtney Vaughn made it 3-1 with a homerun in the bottom of the same frame and a sacrifice fly in the 4th made it the final score of 4-1.
Kathryn Ingles fell to 2-2 in the Badger loss with seven hits, a walk and no strikeouts.
At the plate, SHC was paced by Bourgeois' three hits and five RBI while Laird added two hits and two RBI. Freshman shortstop Shea Blanchard and junior left fielder Mariha Partman also had two hits on the day.
Spring Hill next plays Notre Dame College (2-8) of Ohio on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the tournament's final day.
