On Wednesday evening, the Spring Hill College softball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Notre Dame College in extra innings at the final day of the University of Mobile Classic.
NDC (3-9) opened the game with a 2-run home run to left field by Kelsey Coleman in the top of the 1st inning.
Spring Hill (4-5) added single runs in the bottom of the 4th and 6th innings when freshman catcher Jade Bourgeois drove in a score with a double to deep left-center and then scored from 3rd base off a wild pitch.
In the 8th inning, the Badgers appeared to have dodged a bullet when junior right fielder Katelyn Hinson turned in a double play by corralling a fly ball and throwing out a Notre Dame runner at the plate, but one batter later a single by designated player Savannah Dukich drove in the go-ahead run.
Spring Hill put the tying run on 3rd in the bottom of the frame but senior Jenny Laird was cut down at home on an unsuccessful squeeze play and a ground out to the pitcher with a runner on 2nd would close the books on the Badgers.
Junior pitcher Linsey Dickerson (2-3) accepted the complete game loss, allowing 10 hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Bourgeois had two hits with an RBI for the Badgers.
Ashley Harbarger was the winner in relief with three innings of work, one hit, no walks and three strikeouts. Centerfielder Candace Shofar was 3-for-4 for NDC.
Spring Hill next plays Bryan College (6-9) of Tennessee on Friday at 10 a.m. in the opening day of the Gulf Coast invitational at Gulf Shores, Ala.
