JACKSON, Miss. – The Spring Hill College baseball team could not hold an early 3-0 lead on Friday night as 15th-ranked Belhaven University rallied for a 6-4 win in a Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) game at Smith-Wills Stadium.

Spring Hill took an early 1-0 lead off an unearned run in the 1st inning when Badger shortstop Ryan Cummings scored off a throwing error by Belhaven shortstop Ryne Cook.

Badgers starter Casey Adams (3-3) held the Blazers (23-12, 8-8 SSAC) scoreless through four innings and twice pitched himself out of jams where he had runners at 1st and 3rd bases in the 2nd and 4th innings.

Cummings would pick up an RBI in the 5th inning when his shot to right-centerfield plated Brian Sims from 2nd base. Catcher Ryan Stevens then extended the Badger advantage to 3-0 on the next pitch when his single to left brought in Cummings.

The Blazers responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning when 3rd baseman Bud Britt brought right fielder Tom Wertz around with a single to right-center and 1st baseman Jamie Bruno lifted a sacrifice fly into right field to slice the Badger lead down to a 3-2 margin.

Spring Hill surrendered two unearned runs in the 6th inning as Britt slipped a two-out seeing-eye single past the Badgers' Rick LaForce at 3rd base to give BU its first lead of the night at 4-3.

After Belhaven made it a 5-3 game in the 7th inning, Badger designated hitter Fred Rossi drove a two-out run-scoring double down the right field line in the 8th to bring SHC within 5-4.

Belhaven's Allen Johnson (5-4) went six innings with seven hits, a walk and three strikeouts in the win while Adams lasted six innings for SHC with nine hits, four walks and five strikeouts. Josh Clark added his 9th save of the season for Belhaven in a hitless inning with two strikeouts.

Blazer left fielder Anthony Doss each had three hits for the Blazers while Britt had two hits with four RBI. Cummings and Rossi were both 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Badgers.

Spring Hill (13-16, 5-11 SSAC) will remain in Jackson to finish this 3-game set with Belhaven in a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader at Smith-Wills Stadium.
