The Spring Hill College softball team lost both ends of a conference doubleheader to 18th-ranked Auburn University Montgomery (AUM) on Monday afternoon by the scores of 3-1 and 3-0 at Murray Field.
The Warhawks (24-12, 8-4 SSAC West) and the Badgers went scoreless through the first five innings of Game 1 until a 3-base Badger throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt in the top of the 6th inning brought the Warhawks' pinch runner Amie Kelly around to score from 1st base. Two batters later catcher Danielle Kirkpatrick's third single of the game made it 2-0 by plating pinch runner Katie Cornelius from 3rd base.
AUM tacked on an insurance run in the 7th inning when centerfielder Brandi Richards lifted a triple to deep center with one out and later scored on a wild pitch.
SHC broke up the shutout with a 2-out RBI-double to deep center by shortstop Jade Bourgeois in the bottom of the inning, but then left the tying runs at 2nd and 3rd on a groundout to 2nd base.
Linsey Dickerson (7-10) took the complete-game loss for the Badgers on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts while Cassie Daniels (7-4) was the complete-game winner with seven hits, two walks and five strikeouts.
In the nightcap, AUM grabbed a quick 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the 1st inning and then made it 2-0 with an RBI-single by 3rd baseman Katie Spain in the 4th inning. Kirkpatrick would tack on another AUM run with a single up the middle in the 6th frame.
Kathryn Ingles (5-6) took the complete-game loss for SHC with six hits, three walks and no strikeouts. Courtney Baker (8-0) went four innings with just one hit, no walks and two strikeouts in the win while Haley Johnson collected her second save of the year in three innings with a hit, no walks and no strikeouts.
At the plate for the Badgers, left fielder Mariha Partman had three hits with a run scored while Bourgeois and centerfielder Taylor Webre each had a pair of hits on the day.
Kirkpatrick paced the Warhawk offense with four hits and two RBI while Spain, Richards, 2nd baseman Haley Johnson and right fielder Joanna Reynolds each had two hits in the twin bill.
