WESTWEGO, La. – The Spring Hill College baseball team won a conference road game at Loyola University (La.) by the score of 10-0 on Friday night at Segnette Field.
The Badgers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when senior shortstop Ryan Cummings brought in 2nd baseman Brian Sims with a sacrifice fly. Sims scored again in the 3rd off an RBI-groundout by right fielder Alex Bumb to make it a 2-0 Badger advantage.
A three-run 4th inning for Spring Hill was highlighted by consecutive RBI-singles by 3rd baseman Rick LaForce and centerfielder Andy Robbins as the score climbed to a 5-0 cushion for the Badgers.
SHC 1st baseman Fred Rossi lifted a deep bases-loaded sacrifice fly to left to make it a 6-0 game in the 5th inning as Badger starter Nick Schmiemeier (2-6) coasted through the first four innings allowing just one hit.
Later in the 7th inning, LaForce would make it 7-0 with a run-scoring single that plated designated hitter Wayne Huell from 2nd base and ending the night of Loyola's Matt Ditsworth (2-7). Three more Badger runs in the 9th made the score 10-0 while Loyola broke up the shutout with a run in the final half inning of play.
Schmiemeier picked up the win in seven innings with just two hits allowed, three walks and six strikeouts. Ditsworth took the loss with 6.2 innings of work, nine hits allowed, five walks and three strikeouts.
LaForce had three hits and RBI for the Badgers and left fielder Kendell Carvin added two hits and two runs scored for SHC.
Loyola (12-27, 1-21 SSAC West) collected just three hits on the night.
Spring Hill (17-21, 7-15 SSAC) and Loyola will conclude this 3-game SSAC series with a doubleheader Saturday at Segnette Field beginning at 1 p.m.
