WESTWEGO, La. – The Spring Hill College baseball team swept a conference road doubleheader at Loyola University (La.) by the scores of 4-0 and 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Segnette Field.
In the opening game, Badger starter Casey Adams (4-4) went the distance for his second shutout of the year giving up just five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Loyola's Matthew Guerry took the loss in 6.1 innings with seven hits, three walks and a strikeout.
Spring Hill catcher Ryan Stevens drove in a run with a single in the 1st inning and 3rd baseman Rick LaForce successfully executed a sacrifice squeeze bunt in the 4th inning to make it a 2-0 game. Stevens struck again in the 5th frame with a 2-run double to secure the SHC victory.
The second game saw Stevens score the winning run in the top of the 11th inning off a double by right fielder Wayne Huell with two outs. Trailing 2-0, the Badgers sent the game into extra innings with a 2-run rally in the 8th inning.
Badger reliever Keller Douglas (2-0) picked up the win in three innings of work after taking over for starter Michael Moch who went eight full innings with five hits, three walks and five strikeouts.
George Smith (2-8) took the loss in relief for Loyola (12-29, 1-23 SSAC West).
At the plate, Spring Hill was led by Stevens with four hits and three RBI while 2nd baseman Brian Sims also tallied four hits on the day.
Loyola's 2nd baseman Brandon Snow collected three hits on the afternoon.
Spring Hill (19-21, 9-15 SSAC) will host Thomas University (20-19) in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 3 p.m. at Stan Galle Field.
