MT. VERNON, Ga. – The Spring Hill College baseball team opened this weekend with a Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) loss at Brewton-Parker College on Friday night by the score of 6-5.
Spring Hill took a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning off the Barons' Daniel Jones (7-3) when left fielder Kendell Carvin and 1st baseman John Hollingsworth combined for consecutive run-scoring singles.
In the 4th inning, Jones uncorked two wild pitches that resulted in 3rd baseman Rick LaForce moving from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to home for the third Badger run of the game.
Meanwhile, SHC starter Nick Schmiemeier (2-7) allowed just one hit through the first three innings against the BPC hitters, but then allowed a base hit and four consecutive walks to force in the first two Baron runs of the night making it a 3-2 game. Shortstop Jessue Alvarado's RBI single to the right side was followed by a run-scoring fielding error by the Badger infield that made it a 4-3 Baron advantage after four innings of play.
The teams trade two run frames in the bottom of the 5th and the top of the 6th inning to post a score of 6-5 in favor of the Barons (26-19, 12-13 SSAC) headed into the stretch.
Jones was the winner in 5.1 innings and gave up 11 hits, a walk and five strikeouts while Ben Gillespie added his second save of the year for the Barons with 3.2 innings of relief including two hits, no walks and four strikeouts.
Schmiemeier took the loss in 4.1 innings and allowed four hits with six walks and two strikeouts.
At the plate for the Badgers, 2nd baseman Brian Sims tallied four hits while LaForce collected three safeties. Carvin and Hollingsworth had a pair of hits and an RBI each as the Badgers out hit the Barons 14-5.
For BPC, Alvarado and 1st baseman Chris Carr each had two hits as Alvarado also picked up two RBI.
Spring Hill (19-24, 9-16 SSAC) will wrap up this three-game series with the Barons on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
