The Spring Hill College women's soccer team suffered a 5-1 loss in its season opening contest with NCAA Division 1 opponent Nicholls State University on Sunday afternoon at Library Field.
The Badgers stunned the Colonels (1-1) in the 2nd minute of play with a nice left-to-right crossing goal into the upper right corner by freshman forward Amanda Allen of New Orleans, La., off an assist by fellow freshman and former McGill-Toolen Catholic High School star Courtney Harlan.
The Colonels answered by in the 6th and 17th minutes with a goal by Alexandra Marino with an assist by Jess Coates that was followed up with a Kristy Tatom goal assisted by Janelle Brandom.
NSU carried a 2-1 lead into the halftime locker rooms and then used their bench depth in the second period to wear down a young Badger squad. Coates added a penalty in the past SHC freshman goalkeeper Maggie Dalessio of St. Petersburg, Fla., in the 61st minute while Annie Newell tacked on a fourth score in the 80th minute and assisted Sarah Tani on the final goal in the 82nd minute.
NSU keeper Haley Golden (1-1) made two saves against just three Badger shots and Dalessio tallied six saves against 14 shots by the Colonels.
Spring Hill (0-1) will next travel to Longview, Texas, this weekend to face non-conference opponent Wiley College in back-to-back 1 p.m. contests this Saturday and Sunday.
