The 12th-ranked Spring Hill College volleyball opened the 2012 season with a pair of 3-0 victories over Milligan College and Southeastern University on Friday night at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
In the afternoon match with the Buffaloes of Milligan College (0-1), the Badger won 25-13, 25-15 and 25-21. Junior middle hitter Sha Sha Buchanan of Mobile McGill-Toolen Catholic high School recorded nine kills and four of the Badgers five blocks in the match. Junior setter Taryn Nash of Independence, Mo., dished out 26 assists and sophomore Maddie LaForge of New Orleans, La., served three of the five SHC aces. Junior libero Meredith Donald from McGill-Toolen collected 16 digs.
Overall, the Badger tallied 31 kills for a .255 attack percentage and held the Buffaloes to a .017 attack percentage.
In the nightcap, the Badgers doused the Fire (0-2) 25-23, 25-16 and 25-13. SHC was paced by redshirt freshman Sami Hantak of St. Louis, Mo., with 15 kills while Buchanan added another 14 kills and Donald roped in another 14 digs. Nash handed out 33 assists while freshman Savannah Becnel of Metairie, La., had the badgers' only two blocks in the match.
SHC held a .308 attack percentage with 45 kills in the match while SEU built a .172 average with 33 kills.
The Badgers (2-0) will travel to New Orleans, La., on Tuesday to face Southern University-New Orleans (SUNO) in a non-conference match at The Castle beginning at 6 p.m.
