HOUSTON, Texas – The 12th-ranked Spring Hill College volleyball team opened the St. Thomas Labor Day Tournament with a 3-0 win over against St. Catharine College and then lost 3-2 to host University of St. Thomas in the nightcap on Friday.
In the first match, the Badgers won in straight sets over St. Catharine (2-6) by a score of 25-20, 25-16, 25-14.
The day's second match saw the Fightin' Celts of St. Thomas (3-5) take a 5-set victory over SHC by the scores of 25-19; 25-20; 20-25; 23-25; 15-11, snapping the Badgers' regular season consecutive wins streak at 42 games. The last time the Badgers suffered a loss in the regular season was a 3-0 downturn to the University of West Florida on November 2, 2010.
Against St. Thomas the Badgers were paced by freshman Sami Hantak of St. Louis, Mo., with 13 kills and sophomore Megan Haber of Lillian, Ala., with 10 kills. Junior setter Taryn Nash of Independence, Mo., handed out 36 assists while junior Sha Sha Buchanan of Mobile's McGill-Toolen Catholic High School collected four service aces and three block assists.
Four Celts reached double digits in kills led by Kirsten Kubicek with 20 kills and setter Regina Trapp who dished out an impressive 60 assists.
The Badgers (3-1) will remain in Houston on Saturday for the final day of the event to face Trinity International University (0-4) at 9 a.m. and Calumet College of St. Joseph (3-3) at 3 p.m.
